MEDINA (IQNA) – The Prophet’s Mosque, the second holiest site in Islam, witnessed a huge influx of worshippers last week, a state agency reported.

The mosque, located in the Saudi city of Medina, received more than 6 million Muslims who performed prayers and visited the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

According to the Agency for the Prophet’s Mosque Presidency, the number of worshippers reached 6.3 million in the week from 22nd to 29th of Rabi Al Akhar, the fourth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Among them, 127,671 worshippers prayed at Al Rawda Al Sharifa, the area where the Prophet’s tomb is situated .

The agency said that visitors to Al Rawda Al Sharifa have to book their appointments in advance and adhere to the specified time slots.

Many pilgrims who perform Umrah, the minor pilgrimage, at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam, also visit the Prophet’s Mosque to pray and pay their respects to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Saudi Arabia expects around 10 million foreign Muslims to do Umrah during the current season.
