MWL Chief Slams Media’s Role in Intensifying Sectarian Differences

IQNA – Criticizing some media outlets that fan the flames of sectarian differences and disputes, the secretary general of the Muslim World League called for promotion of Islamic fraternity.

Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Issa urged that the Muslim World’s media should be committed to the mission of raising awareness and promoting dialogue aimed at enhancing proximity in the Muslim world.

He made the remark while addressing the Global Conference for Building Bridges between Islamic Schools of Thought and Sects, which was launched in the holy city of Mecca on Sunday.

He said despite their differences, all Muslims are under the banner of one religion and so there is no place for discord.

Issa said sectarian slogans only lead to intensification of clashes and differences and must be avoided.

He also stressed the role of the Islamic world’s scholars in fostering proximity among Islamic schools of thought.

Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hissein Ibrahim Taha was another speaker who said Islam has ordered peace and brotherhood and there is need to eradicate menace of sectarianism from Islamic states so that the Muslim Ummah can move forward together science and technology.

He said God, the Almighty, commands in the Holy Quran to avoid division and therefore Muslim should follow the command of God and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and avoid division and promote unity.

He said only the enemies of Islam take advantage of sectarianism, urging the Islamic Ummah to stay away from elements that spread sectarianism and end mutual differences.

Scholars, muftis, thinkers and personalities from different Islamic countries have taken part in the two-day event, according to the Muslim World League’s website.

Among the speakers at the conference are Abbas Khameyar, the cultural and social deputy of the University of Religions and Sects, and member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Ahmad Mobaleghi.

The first in its kind, the conference features purposeful dialogues to enhance relations among Islamic schools of thought and serve their common objectives.

The participants seek to foster unified Islamic brotherhood, cooperation and harmony in perspectives on key issues and goals of the Muslim Ummah.

They also discuss confronting speeches, slogans and methods of exclusion based on sects.

At the end of the conference, they are going to issue a “Charter of Building Bridges between Islamic Sects”.
