IQNA – Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, in which thousands of bombs have been dropped on civilian areas, is the most destructive conflict in modern history, a report said.

It “is generating destruction comparable in scale to the most devastating urban warfare in the modern record,” according to the report from the Wall Street Journal.

Confirming that the Israeli occupation forces dropped 29,000 bombs on the besieged strip between October 7 and mid-December, the outlet also said 70% of Gaza’s homes and around half of its buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Only eight of the strip’s 36 hospitals are still in operation, the WSJ added, also pointing out that two-thirds of schools have been damaged.

“The word ‘Gaza’ is going to go down in history along with Dresden and other famous cities that have been bombed,” the outlet quoted political scientist Robert Pape as saying.

The WSJ report also highlighted the destruction of several historic and religious sites in the strip, including the Great Omari Mosque and the Church of Saint Porphyrius.

Israel’s occupation forces started a relentless military campaign on the Gaza Strip on October 7, following the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation launched by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

In the nearly three months since, Israel’s brutal Gaza campaign has killed some 22,000 Palestinian people, most of them women and children. Over 50,000 have also been injured, while 80% of the strip’s 2.2 million population have been displaced.

The indiscriminate Israeli attacks have killed and injured teachers, doctors, journalists, and UN staff. The war has been the deadliest ever for UN staff, and the number of dead journalists had reached 99 earlier this month.
