TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani condemned Saturday missile strikes against Syria, describing them as illegal and barbaric.

The US, Britain and France launched airstrikes on Saturday against Syrian research, storage and military targets under the pretext of a suspected chemical attack near Damascus last weekend that killed more than 40 people.

This is while Syria turned over its entire chemical stockpile under a deal negotiated by Russia and the United States back in 2013.

Addressing an open session of the parliament on Sunday, Larijani said the era of such barbaric actions is gone, stressing that such moves will only strengthen the resolve of the Syrian nation to destroy the enemy.

Referring to the allegation that Syria has used chemical weapons, he said Syrian and Russia have dismissed the claim and called for investigation into the matter by international bodies.

While there is a mechanism defined in international system to deal with the issue, why do the three countries refused to let it be handled legally and hurriedly carried out the attack, he wondered.

Larijani added that the main reason behind the attack was the defeat of terrorists in Eastern Ghouta who have been supported by the West.

Shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Britain” after Larijani’s remarks, Iran’s lawmakers also slammed the attacks.

On Saturday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei condemned the airstrikes by the US, the UK and France on Syria as “crime,” describing the leaders of the three Western states as “criminals.”

“I clearly declare that the US president, the French president and the UK prime minister are criminals and have committed a crime,” the Leader said.

The three countries, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “will achieve nothing and make no benefit, as they have been in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan in the past few years, and committed such crimes but have not profited from them.”
